CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee. October 8. The residents of the inclement South must be little short of angels to boar with equanimity the sudden changes we are subject to. For a short spell—a very short spell. 1 may add—we were tempted into sundry little follies of a picnic to the sea side, or appearing in a blouse, but last week put all such nonsense out of our heads, and we had a taste of winter of the rudest kind. It was most provoking of it. too. just when a few enthusiastic athletes wanted to turn the whole community out of bed at 5 a.m.. oilices open at. 7 «.m., and close at 3 p.m., so that they may play ciicket. etc. There is no reason on earth to prevent them playing cricket at 5 o’clock in the morning if they wish, but why alter the time table like that is rather a mystery. At a meeting to consider the subject last night, 1 notice the attendance, owing to the unfaroucable weather, was very small, so it is put off for another week. On Friday evening Mrs Henry Wood, of Parkfield, gavu a

SMALL JLVINIIJ DANCE. Amongst thoe who thoroughly enjoyed their kind hostess’ hoepiudity were Misses Macgregur (Wellington!. Bullock. Meare-, Babington. Stead. Raseeli. etc., the Masters Denniston. Stead. Ba bi ng ton. W ocd. etc. .... » .. . Next week Mrs Stead. ‘St rowan.’ is giving a juvenile dance. On Wednesday afternoon THE ANNUAL SPORTS in connection with Mrs Bowen’s private school were held in the grounds of the Hon. C. C. Bowen. Riccarton. The girls were favoured with a lovely day for tbeir/tte. and seemed to enjoy the events as much a- snv of their brothers would have done under the circumstances. Toe sack race was particularly funny. The winner, little Miss Jacobs, proved herself quite an adept. The sports themselves were held outside the garden, and to where an adjournment was made early in the afternoon for lea. This welcome beverage was dispensed on the beautifully smooth green lawn under the trees. The last race finished about 5 p.m.. when all the drags returned to town with the school flag (red. white, and green, floating over the driver's seat. Amongst i hose present were Mesdames Bowen, Neave. Bourne. Russell, Anderson, Vernon. Guthrie. Muridge. Meares. Jennings, the Misses Cotter! 1). Ward. Bowen. Metres. Neave. Julius. Townend, Henry. Matthias, etc. THE COLLEGE SPORTS are to be held to-day, and Warwick House to morrow, and with all these things on hand it seems like approaching the end of term time, and summer in the near future. , _ . . The C.N.C- are in camp at Addington, and make Hagley Park look quite gay as they go through various manoeuvres several times a day there. On Sunday, though a most inclement day. numerous visitors arrived at the camp and were entertained at afternoon tea. They hold their annual sports on Saturday, when they break up and return to their homes. Dolly Vale.
