CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, August 30. We have had the last of the series of MR WALLACE’S CHAMBER CONCERTS. the programme being a * plebiscite ’ one. with the result of one of the grandest concerts ever listened to in Christchurch, and we must thank Mr Wallace partly for educating us up to being able to appreciate such good music. The'Love Waltzes' were the only vocal numbers, and were a charming feature interpreted as they were by Miss M. Bell. Mrs Wilson. Messrs Weir and Millar. Mr Wallaco gave that wonderful solo, ‘ UTrillodel Diabolo.* with greatsuccess, and of the concerted pieces 'The Trout’ was perhaps the greatest favourite. Mrs Wilding played the only piano solo. Beethoven’s ‘ Pathetique.’ but did not seem up to her usual form, though quite recovering herself in ‘ Tne Trout.' Mrs Wilson looked exceedingly well in electric blue silk and brocade trimmed with black lace; Mrs Wilding wore a handsome trained gown of black velvet with white satin front; Miss M. Bell, a very pretty white silk dress with lace panier and berthe, with bouquets of violets ; Miss Rich, a rich ruby velvet trimmed with fur; and Miss Bea th, a lovely peacock plush. Among the large audience were Mrs Embling, in black with old gold yoke veiled with lace; the Misses Julius, in black; Mrs Buller, in grey silk and black lace; Mrs Burns, pretty black dress trimmed with jet; Mrs Westmacott. black velvet wilh old gold trimming; Mrs (Professor) Cook, a very pretty grey cloak with satin capes; Mrs and Miss Bowen, Miss frtudholme, Mrs and Miss Lingard. Mrs and Miss Graham, Mrs Gibbs. Mrs Wallace, Mr and Mrs Rich, Mesdames vt allace, Merton. J. R. Scott. Campbell, Ronalds. Meares. Common, Ur and Miss Reeves. Mr and Miss Raphael, Mr and Mrs S. Gordon. Misses Meares. Cotterill. Davie, Gordon, Mrs and Miss Kane, Mr and Mrs Barkas. Judge aud Mrs Denniston. Captain and Mrs Gar&ia, Mrs Turrell, Miss Fairhurst, Misses March, etc. A CHRISTENING. Mr and Mrs P. Campbell’s little son began his festivities early by having a reception after being christened, which ceremony was performed at St. Michael’s church by the Rev. Averill. The font was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and a number of guests present, who afterwards adjourned to Forres House for cake and wine. Among those present were the Rev. and Mrs Averill. Mrs fitead. Mrs O’Rorke, Mr and Mrs A. E G. Rhodes Mrs Boyle, lhe Hon. Mrs Parker. Mr, Mrs and Miss Hill. Mrs Ogle, Miss Roberts, Miss Babingion, and a few others. The little fellow received quite a number of beautiful presents. On Saturday in very fine weather lhe POINT TO POINT RACK took place at Templeton, a large number of people riding and driving out to witness it. Mr R. H. Rhodes acted as starter, and Mr Lyon as judge. Among those driving w r ere Mr and Mrs Stead, Mr and Misses Cowlishaw. Mr and Mrs Macdonald, Mr and Airs H. Wood, the Hon. Mrs Parker, Misses Ned will. Wilson, Helmore. and others. Among those on horseback were Mrs Lyon, Mr and Miss Tabart. Misses Gerrard and Spensley. Mr and Miss Haydon. Mr and Miss Winter. Dr. Stack. Messrs Turrel. O Rorke, B. Lane, G. Gould, and others. OPERA. The Opera, Company aro not getting the good houses their per formances deserve, but we must put it down partly to the very heavy tax we have had upon us so long for the unemployed, and also the counter attraction of Bentley at the Tuam street Theatre. Miss Annis Montague sings as well if not better than ever: Miss Staunton has a lovely voice, and is a favourite, while Farley has greatly improved, so there is no fault in them, though the staging of the operas is very poor. DANCE AT SUMNER. The young folk at Sumner had a great treat last. Saturday. A dance was given in the Town Hall by Mrs Morton, and about forty chi dren were present, besides a good number of ’grownups.’ Dancing was kept up till 8 p.m.. and it was a wonderfully pretty sight toseeho w well the littleonesdancenowadays.the bright frocks and sashes worn adding greatly to brighten the scene. Among the many children were Misses Dobson. Booker. Preston (three), kitson (two). Collins. Wiggins. Rhind, and Masters Preston, Dobson, Kitson and many others. Delicious jellies trifles, cakes etc., were served during the evening, and I fancy’ the children did full justice to them all. TENNIS.
