PICTON.

Dear Bee, May 25. Although we cannot boast of having had Queen s weather for THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY, it was good enough to allow us to enjoy ourselves between the showers. Several boating parties went out. some to shoot, some to fish, and a few to picnic. Laughing Bob’s Bay being the goal of the picnicker’s ambition, though one party were adventurous enough to pull down to Watamonga. The Torea left Picton at 9 a.m. with a goodly number of visitors for the bail given by the

bachelors of Endeavour Inlet to their friends, picking up another contingent at the Grove, from CuHensvillv. making the number up to sixty. This with visitors from the two Sounds and the residents at the Inlet, altogether made up a crowded audience for the concert and dance, which. I am told by a returned guest, was an unqualified success. The hospitality of the employes of the Antimony Mining Company at Endeavour Inlet has become a household’ word in Marlborough, and outside of the romance ami interest attached to the place, we all have a warm feeling of regard for the inhabitants. THE PICTON FIRE BRIGADE initiated a concert, the Ji ante being a farce and a dance, in aid of the funds for the purchase of a tire-bell. In spite of the counterattractions at the Inlet a large and enthusiastic audience appeared. and the funds of the Brigade must have been considerably augmented. Amongst, the audience I noticed Mr and Mrs Waddy, Mr and Mrs Rutherford, Mrs H. C. Seymour, Mrs Cooper. Mrs Allen, Mr and Mrs Philpotts. Mrs H. Godfrey, Mrs John Conolly (Blenheim), Mr and Miss Howard, the Misses MelHsh. Speed. Dobson (Blenheim). Waddy. White, Greensill (three). Seymour. Allen. Young, P. Dobson, Falconer. Philpotts. Gard, Carey. Fell, Eyes, Linton. Hassell, etc. Amongst the performers at the concert a few deserve special notice, Mrs Atkinson in particular, whose splendid voice was heard to advantage in ‘Golden Love,’ and also in the duet, * Wandering in the May time,’ the other performer being her young niece. Miss Drew’, who has a charming alto voice, and knows how to use it. Mrs Atkinson and Miss Lloyd sang ‘ May’st Thou Dream of Me.’ Miss Lloyd made her first appearance before a Picton audience in this pretty duet, and her really wonderful voice, which seemed to fill the room, astonished everybody. Miss Mary Seymour sang ‘ The Pilots Daughter’ very sweetly, the song and the singing thereof both being greatly appreciated; but the gem of the evening was undoubtedly Mr H. C. Seymour’s rendition of ‘ Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep.’ His rich deep bass voice rolled out the numbers to his delighted audience, who would not be said nay when they demanded an encore. A good many character songs were interspersed amongst the other items, and the farce was the outcome of the ‘original talent’ of Messrs Harris and F. Card. FOR THE DANCE I have only a few’ new dresses to describe. Mrs Atkinson looked very nice in black broche with white silk vest, and Miss Drew in grey Japanese silk made with corselet skirt laced over white muslin shirt, also looked very nice; Miss Polly Dobson was greatly admired in black, with pink sash and white front; Miss M. Seymour wore black net, with canary coloured ribbons and chrysanthemums; the Misses Philpotts (two) were in black, and Miss S. Philpotts in white muslin; Miss Isabel Seymour wore white; Miss L. Falconer, pink, and most of the other girls wore their walking dresses. The partners, amongst whom the members of the Brigade were greatly en evidence, were Messrs Greensill, Linton. Harris (Richmond Bay), Seymour, White, Scott, Baillie (two). Fell. Howard, and a number of footballers. Mr Henry Fisk. Secretary to the Brigade, and C. Philpotts, M.C. to the proceedings, were indefatigable in their efforts to make the affair a success.

Jean.
