AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, June 14. You will find in ‘ Topics ’ a necessarily brief account of what was a most successful function. The ST. GEORGE’S ROWING CLUB BALL is always one of the smart events of the season, and this year it was even more successful than usual. My duty, however, simply consists in telling who were there and what they were gowned in—a hopeless task when I think of the number. Amongst those I remember, however, were the following :— Mrs W. R. Bloomfield was acknowledged on all sides as undoubtedly the ‘belle.’ She looked simply lovely in a very handsome gown of white satin and brocade, trimmed with lilies of the valley, her fine figure showing the gown off to the greatest advantage ; Mrs Isidore Alexander wore a very beautiful gown of pale blue silk ; Mrs H. White looked lovely in white tulle ; her sister, in blue ; Miss Johnstone, pale blue; the Misses Kerr-Taylor, dainty white frocks ; Miss Hull, handsome white silk ; Miss Purchas was prettily garbed in white ; Miss Pierce looked fresh in cream, and her sister in white ; Miss Wilkins, pretty rose pink tulle ; her sister wore white; Miss Davy, very rich cream silk gown ; Miss Hay (Sydney) looked well in stylish white silk and tulle ; Miss Rookes, a unique dress of black lace, white ostrich feathers on her shoulder and a raven’s wing in her hair ; Miss Berry, brown velvet ; Miss Dixon looked pretty in white tulle; Miss Ethel Bull, white silk ; Miss A. THE PONSONBY SOCIAL UNION held their second dance on Friday evening in the Oddfellow’s Hall. Reid and Davis’ band supplied delightful music, and the attendance of ladies and gentlemen was about equal. Mrs W. J. Rees wore black corded silk ; Mrs Morrin, black satin and lace gown ; Mrs Kronfeld, handsome cream cashmere embroidered costume ; Mrs Hanna, pretty black lace and silk gown ; Mrs Cossar, black with vest and trimmings of white silk veiled with lace ; Mrs Hopkins, pretty gown of pink satin veiled with black net; Miss Owen, lovely white merveilleux gown ; Miss Bastard, pretty black silk and lace dress finished with yellow ribbons ; her sister wore cream cashmere ; Miss M. Adams’ Band supplied delightful music, and as the gentlemen were in the majority, there was no absence of good partners. The ladies’ committee provided a dainty supper, which was duly enjoyed. Mrs Masefield, Mrs Devore, Mrs Upton, and Mrs Hanna all wore gowns of the ever favourice black silk; Mrs T. Cotter wore black silk trimmed with steel passementerie ; Miss Masefield looked nice in pink silk; Miss Evans wore black with streamers of white ribbon ; Miss Boyd (Takapuna) looked nice in cream with moss green trimmings'; Miss Bach, becoming scarlet net gown ; Miss Langsford, pretty rose pink gown ; Miss Laird, cardinal net gown ; Miss E. THE AUCKLAND ORCHESTRAL UNION, under Mr Towsey, gave the second concert of their season in the City Hall, the large building being filled with a fashionable, and judging from the large number of wellknown musical people present, I should also add, a critical audience. All the items on the well-arranged programme were warmly received, several obtaining encores. Mr A. L. Edwards and Mrs G. Coates were the only soloists, the latter wearing a handsome black evening dress. I was, unfortunately, seated in a bad position, and therefore cannot give you a description of any of the smart frocks worn. Amongst the ladies present I, however, noticed Mrs C. Houghton, Misses Reeve, Misses Chew, Mrs Ruck, Mrs Goodhue, Mrs Tewsley, Miss Kilgour. Misses Murchie, Mrs Archdale Tayler, Miss Howden, Mrs F. Kenderdine, Mrs Herman-Brown, Mrs Cousins, Mrs Edger, Mrs Archie Clark, Mrs Howard, Miss Stevenson, Mrs A. L. Edwards, and numerous others.

Muriel.
