A HUMOURIST’S TRIALS.
A humourist lecturer relates this incident : I gave the show in the hotel dining room and everybody roared with laughter, except one awfully sedate looking man. I tried my funniest gag upon him, and was wild to awaken a gurgle or at least a smile, but all in vain. His face was as solemn as a tombstone through it all. After the show, however, fancy my surprise to see the melancholy cuss come up and give me a congratulatory shake. * I must thank you, sir, for a very pleasant evening. Your performance was very clever. I almost laughed, sir.’
