THE MAYOR OF WANGANUI.
Mr Alfred J. Roberts, now for the second time Mayor of Wanganui, is a man in the prime of middle age, and one whose many services in the cause of the public has contributed to make him very popular. In his capacities of Director of the Freezing Company, as member of the Harbour Board, of the Charitable Aid Board, of the Chamber
of Commerce, and of other local institutions, he figureprominently and with great credit among his fellowtownsmen. During his occupancy of the Mayoralty he has exhibited great tact, ability, and tlnency of speech, in addition to considerable busines- aptitude. His period of office has also l>een signalised by the very satisfactory readjustment of the balance of the borough from a debit to a credit, and the disappearance of a large overdraft. He is acting Chairman of Committees for the Hon. John Ballance, and his popularity is such as to lead to his being solicited to contest the seat of Wanganui, but in vain.
Mr Roberts, who is in the fortunate position of being independent of all necessity to perform anything other than the many obligations which he voluntarily assumes for the public good, occupies a charming residence at St. John's, one of the most agreeable of the suburban districts of Wanganui.
