EIGHT HOURS' DEMONSTRATION IN AUCKLAND.

N the present page we present an illustration of atff’le the procession of the eight hours'demonstration jffft&F-. up Auckland, with the head of it in the act of crossing Victoria-street, op- ~ - posite to the Union Bank of Australasia. The demonstration was held on the 10th of November, and although the day opened sombrely, the clouds broke away as it advanced, and concluded with as soft and sunny an afternoon of the late spring quality as the most fastidious could desire. Conspicuous in the front of the procession appears the great banner of the Eight Hours' Demonstration Committee, borne by six men. Immediately behind this came the waggon of the Seamen's Federated Union drawn by four horses, adorned with bannerettes, and bearing upon it a boat containing twelve seamen with up-lifted oars. Next is seen that banner with the Strange device of the Tailors' Union, indicating the beneficial effect the fall of man and woman has had in creating the diversities of fashion, and suggesting the idea that mother Eve played the appledodge upon our unfortunate ancestor with the express purpose of giving her daughters the appliances for bewildering and worrying the men. Receding into the vista behind this we see the various emblems of the other trades, of the Bootmakers’ Union and some seventeen others. Most prominent of all were the iimMa of the Fourth Estate and the printers, which, unfortunately, are not visible in the illustration. The trolly of the -Verr Zealand Herald threw off miniature copies of its front-page as it progressed, while that of the Star Printing Works was covered with machines in active operation, and decked with specimen works of fancy binding, and sample copies of the New Zealand Graphic and the New Zealand Farmer. Moving np with music to the neighbourhood of the Hospital and the Domain the procession there concentrated upon the Cricket Ground, where the remainder of the day was spent most enjoyably in the indulgence of sports and other innocent gaieties.
