Our Place in the Sun
“Put a veil on, dear, and take a parasol, or the sun will ruin your complexion,”
UOW ridiculous this sort of thing ■*- sounds nowadays. We don’t get enough sunshine to want to keep, any out, and what girl would be stifled up in a veil on a sunny day or carry a sunshade unless it were for show? Since we have had so little sun we have been discovering how very beneficial it is. Nearly all our obstinate constitutional diseases benefit by sunshine.
it is worth it. Sun-bathing has become most popular in England and on the Continent of recent years, while the cult of “sun-cure” as the best treatment for sickly, puny crippled children has attained great vogue with the fullest endorsement of the medical profession.
TT is not only sickly children that ® need the curative sunshine. The
healthy ones need it to keep them healthy and give them Nature’s an-ti-toxin to disease.
When we find a delicate, undeveloped child we no longer wrap him up and keep him at home in a warm room: we take his clothes off and keep him out of doors in the sunshine with nothing on but a bathing suit.
Of course, it needs discretion and must be done very gradually. It requires a great deal of thought and trouble and constant supervision to get that golden-brown tinge of sunburn all over the little body that cures by Nature’s own medicine. But
Don’t let them get cold, but don’t smuggle them up with clothes so that the sun cannot get at them. Plenty of good plain food, and very few but warm and comfortable garments and as much of their fat arms and legs exposed as is consistent with sufficient warmth, and Doctor Sun and Nurse Fresh Air will see to their protection against ill-health. Don’t we all—even those of us who are no longer young—feel more healthy and comfortable in fewer clothes, shorter skirts and sleeves, and—whisper it!— hair?
