ON THE DEATH OF A PIONEER
by LADY GODIVA
Drazv near and look! These fastclosed eyes have seen Where note our busy city peaceful lies. An anxious band seek out the blockhouse screen, While arms and gear complete their zvarlike guise. Drazv near and look! Beneath the thin grey hair Lies hid a jagged scar, memento stern Of hozv she snatched her child, as mothers dare, And faced the savage lurking in the fern. Drazv near and look! This heart had faith to see The splendid promise of these faroff lands. And, leaving home and kin, devotedly Prepared the zvay for us with patient hands. Drazv near and look! In reverence bozv and knozv All that zve are to-day, to such as she zve ozve.
