Maternity Annex, Taumarunui Hospital

The Taumarunui Hospital Board have recently opened this annexe on the site of the old Hospital Nurses' Home, which building m connection with the former district nurses' cottage has been utilised and added to, with the result that a tolerably efficient maternity annexe has been evolved providing eight lyingin beds, with labour ward, small nursery, sterilising room, preparation room, and a detached hutment for a possible morbid case, also the necessary sanitary arrangements. There are comfortable quarters for the Matron m the building. The nurses have a comfortable Home m the old hospital isolation block nearby. This annexe fills a great want m the

district, which is growing rapidly. Miss Gillespie, R.N., R.M., is the Matron. She had been given leave by her Board (after a most strenuous year m charge of the makeshift building previously used as a maternity hospital m Taumarunui) to undergo the Plunket training at Karitane Hospital, and recently returned, having enjoyed the work at Karitane. Nurse Webb, R.M., is the staff nurse. A new Cottage Hospital has recently been opened at Huntly, under the Waikato Hospital Board, for maternity and emergency cases. Miss E. Swayne, R.N., R.M., Sister for many years, and more recently Home Sister at Waikato Hospital, has been appointed Matron.
