"THE FORSYTE SAGA."

John Galsworthy

(By

Though not altogether a new book, the above, being now published m one volume comprising four complete novels, m which the history of a large family typical of the upper middle class m England is presented, can be recommended to thoughtful readers as a most interesting and enthralling piece of literature. Those who enjoy being carried from one generation to another and following the fortunes of people who become, as one reads, almost personal acquaintances, will be thoroughly interested. One's sympathies are enlisted by the story of Soames Forsyte, who, a devoted lover, is unable to elicit the response his devotion deserves. His wife, Irene, is a charming character whose personality affects all with whom she conies m contact. The second part of the "Saga," "The Indian Summer of a Forsyte," gives m beautiful and poetical language the love of an old man for the charming and beautiful woman — a love of the soul, satisfied by her trusting friendship. The third part is the story of the freedom of Irene and her second and happy marriage, while Soames endeavours to console himself for his wasted life, but with only partial success. The fourth part gives the story of the children of these two.
