Registration of Mental Nurses.
With the above object, the first examination of the mental Hospital nursing staffs has been held. The candidates eligible were those nurses and attendants who had served for three years and over, and had undergone the necessary training by attendance at lectures and clinical demonstrations. The examination was divided into three parts, a written (the paper is printed hereunder) a practical, on nursing, conducted by Miss Maclean, and a viva voce, largely practical, conducted at each of the Mental Hospitals by Dr. Hay and the medical superintendent, who trained the candidate. The course of training embraced elementary anatomy and physiology and first aid work, the symptoms to be observed and reported and the nursing treatment of common bodily diseases, and the special knowledge required for proficiency in the care and nursing of the insane. The number of candidates was 79. In three cases the viva voce examination is not completed, and of the remaining 76 the number receiving less than 60 per cent, of the marks is 22, while 54 qualified for registration. The standard attained by those who passed may be gauged by the percentage marks obtained— l6 got 60% ; 11, 65% ; 5, 70% ; 8, 75% ; 4, 80% ; 7, 85% ; and 3, 90%.
