Stolen, between 6.30 and 8 p.m., on tbe 25th April, 1874, an open-faced silver verge watch, No. 1305, with steel chain attached, case much worn, value £3 ; the property of John Hefford, Dunsandel. William Henderson, known as Yankee Bill, 30 years, 6ft. high, strong build, fresh complexion, no whiskers or moustache, goatee beard, lightgrey suit, and Yankee hat; and Ered. Stevens, about 35 years, sft. 9in., dark complexion, dark hair, slovenly appearance, grey tweed trousers, dark coat and billycock hat’, fond of drinking, both working near Dunsandel, are suspected.

Stolen, from Waimate, on the night of tbe 3rd April, 1874, a dark brown gelding, aged, 15 hands 3in., branded M.D. near shoulder, short prick ears, short dock, stands straight on fore fetlocks ; tbe property of William Sherwood Eaine, Identifiable.

Stolen, from the Post Office, Adelaide, South Australia, during the _ night of the 28th April, 1874, about 25 registered letters, containing Bank notes to the amount of one thousand three hundred and three pounds, and cheques for large amounts. All the notes numbered as below are identifiable.

Two hundred pounds reward will be paid to anyone giving any information that may lead to the apprehension of the offender. Supposed to be some one employed in the office.

John Brighting, English, 17 years, sft. sin., medium build, pale complexion, thin face, dark hair, dressed in dirty grey suit of tweed, and black billycock hat, still in Christchurch, is suspected, as he was seen loitering about the shop. Identifiable.

Stolen, from John Thompson, Racecourse, between 8 p.m. 13th, and 8 a.m. 14th May, 1874, a saddle, about 18 months in wear, staple and nail from near side, and D from centre gone, nail in off side marked “Howell, maker, Christchurch “ Ashford and Winder” on web inside; a plain snaffle bridle with oblong silver buckles, pretty old ; total value, £4. Identifiable.

James Cumming, English, 50 years, sft. 10in., stout build, round face, small eves, small dark whiskers, peculiar hoarse voice’ dressed in blue dungaree jacket, lightcoloured pants, dark round skull cap, ships’ boatswain; _ and Robert Harding, English, 26 years, sft. 6in., fair complexion, fair hair’ whiskers, and moustache, one front tooth wanting in upper jaw, dressed in dirty white trousers, canvas jumper, skull cap, and sea boots, speaks with a lisp, are charged with deserting from the ship Apelles, in Lyttelton harbour, on the 15th May, 1874.

Edward Dixon, English, 45 years, sft. sin., stout build, full face, large nose, full whiskers (turning grey), dressed in blue monkey jacket, light tweed trousers, and light-coloured Yankee hat, is charged with deserting from the barque Auriga , in Lyttelton harbour, on the night of the 17th May, 1874. Capt. Elderton offers a reward of £3 for this man’s arrest.

Andrew Hood, Scotch, about 30 years of age, sft. 8 or 9in., stout build, florid complexion, sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, dressed in an old tweed suit with brown stripe, old billycock hat, wore a diamond ring, is charged on warrant from Timaru, with stealing a cheque for £4 17s. Id. (since recovered), the property of William Catlow. Hood cashed the cheque at the Sportman’s Arms Hotel, Saltwater Creek, near Timaru.
