Reverting to Canterbury Police Gazette , No. 6, 1874, page 40, the father of missing friend Walmesley offers £IOO reward for information of his residence, if alive, or the date and place of his death, if dead. Photograph in the office of Commissioner of Police, Christchurch.
Reverting to Criminal Offences, dated Christchurch, April 30,1874, offender Thomas Oliver, alias Gray, has been arrested by Mounted-Constable Dorn, Timaru Police, and stands committed for trial.
The three French sailors, deserters ex barque Kerclialon, are not required, the vessel having sailed.
On the 19th April, 1874, at 11.30 p.m., a pile of wheat sacks covered with straw, on Nicholson’s farm, Levels Plains, Timaru, was discovered to he on fire, but was speedly extinguished. Six bags of wheat value £6 were burned. The whole of the wheat was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company’s office for £6OO. William Bartle is suspected, a labourer, 35 years, medium build, round shouldered, dark complexion, dark small whiskers, dressed in moleskin trousers, old brown tweed coat, drab billycock hat, watertight boots, resident in the district.
On the 3rd instant, between 2 a.m. and 4.30 a.m., the combine and straw elevator of a machine belonging to Eobert Colville, which was being worked on Mr. Wells’ farm at Kakahu, threshing wheat, were destroyed by fire, the origin of which is unknown. No suspicion attaches to any one.
