Missing Friends.
Information is required as to the whereabouts of James Smart, Irish, about 36 years of age, sft. 6in , stout build, fair complexion, perceptible though slight lameness of left leg, caused by a sprain. Smart left Auckland in August last, and was heard of from Christchurch in October; since then all letters addressed to him remain at the Post Office, Christchurch, uncalled for. His aged mother is in great distress about him. Information to be sent to the Commissioner of Police, Christchurch.
About midnight on the 25th March, 1874, the straw around a threshing machine belonging to Mr. Colville, who was threshing wheat on the farm of Mr. Gladstone, at Orari, was discovered to be on fire. The men being quickly aroused by Robert Moulton, succeeded in saving the engine and combine, but the elevator was destroyed. No suspicion attaches to any one. The' machine was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company’s Office, at Timaru —the engine, £150; combine, £l5O ; and elevator, £lO.
Between the hours of 5 p.m. 24th, and 7 a.m. 25th March, 1874, a ferret, the property of Mr. Wilfrid Constable Maxwell, which was in a cage in the yard of the Criterion Hotel, Timaru, was killed by a dog. The ferret could not have got out of the cage itself, as the door was found closed. Mr. Maxwell offers a reward of £5 for the discovery of the offender.
