Miscellaneous Information.

Extract from Auckland Police Gazette, Oct. 1, 1867, No. 26, p. 157. Information is requested respecting one William Kinloch, who left his wife privily about 18 months ago. Nothing was heard of him until about three weeks since when he was seen in Auckland. He, however, remained for only two or three days, having proceeded to Hokitika, where it is said he is keeping a public house. Description of Kinloch : age about 42 years, 5 feet 6 inches high, florid complexion, sandy hair, slight whiskers, stout build, an iron and brass founder by trade.

A Warrant has been issued by the Greymouth Bench for the apprehension of one Erank Smith, for the non-payment of a penalty of £2 inflicted in the Eesident Magistrate’s Court. He is an Englishman, 30 years old,. 5 feet 4 inches high, slight build, light brown .hair, sandy beard and moustache, beard short and grizzly, blue eyes, full face, a very haggard appearance. Dressed when leaving Greymouth in grey sac coat, dark trousers, and black billycock hat. Supposed to have gone to Westport or some of the diggings in the Nelson Province.

About 11.30 p.m. of the 24th ultimo an attempt was made, to set fire to the schoolhouse attached to St. u . s Church, Manchester-street, Christchurch, by placing a quantity of combustible matter, consisting ot tuft of dry grass, some small sticks, and some canvas rags, in the gutter running between the double roof where it smouldered for some time before urstmg into a flame. The fire was extinguished before much damage was done.

ESCAPING PROM LEGAL CUSTODY. Escaped, at 9 p.m. of the 27th ultimo, from Her Majesty’s Gaol, Lyttelton, a prisoner named William Noon, undergoing a sentence of three years for forgery and uttering. He is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender build, fresh complexion, dark liair, grey eyes, thin scar over right eye, hollowcheeks, short sandy heard and moustache, cheeks shaved, prominent forehead, smart appearance, droops his head, when speaking ; was dressed in moleskin trousers and shirt marked with broad arrow ; may be

accompanied by Walter Harris alias Johnston, and probably another named Hardine, both of whom have recently been discharged from gaol. (Since arrested by Christchurch Police.)

A Police Station was formed at the Ashburton on the 13th October, 1867.

The horse No. 3 in List of horses and cattle reported as stolen in present issue, has been recovered, it having only strayed.
