List of appointments, &c., since the publication of the last list: — promotions. Third-class Inspector Peter Pender has been promoted to the rank of Second-class Inspector Second-class Constable Thomas J. By an has been promoted to the rank of First-class Constable. Third-class Constable Philip Thoreau has been promoted to the rank of Second-class Constable.

A WARRANT has been issued by the Greymouth Bench, for the apprehension of one James Davidson, alias Smith, charged with obtaining money from Duncan McLean, Storekeeper, Greymouth, by false pretences. He is a Scotchman, about 28 years of age, o feet 8 inches high, stout build, erect gait; sandy hair, beard and whiskers, no moustache, florid complexion; often smiles; dressed in nearly new sac coat of dark color light trousers and glengarry cap; a hard drinker, and fond of billiards ; a blacksmith by trade: supposed to have gone to Hokitika.

Escaped Prisoner.

A Convict named James Dumont alias Henry an lands, sentenced at the September sessions, o, o four years penal servitude tor stealing a large sum o money from the schooner Kiwi, efiected ns escape from Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, ear y on ie morning of Tuesday, the 13th August ISG7. ine following is the description of the ofiender: age It years, but looks older; height 5 ft. 2? m.; complexion swarthy, hair dark and short, clean s , eyes grey, humpbacked, short neck, large ea , our front teeth missing ; asthmatic, and evinces i w ien speaking ;by calling, a ship’s cook, a native o es - Indies ; scar on front of right shoulder, pockmar t left arm, mole on left shoulder blade, scar on inside left leg. Escaped in prison clothing, which, however, he may divest himself of.

The horse Ho. 1 in List of Horses and Cattle Stolen in present issue has been recovered, it having only strayed.
