Escaping from Legal Custody.
At 10.30 a.m., of the Bth ult., two men named John Beid alias Maori Jack, and William Montressor, escaped from the new gaol, Hokitika. Beid alias Maori Jack, is a native of America, 27 years old, a sailor, 5 ft. in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, very dark, black hair, dark hazel eyes, slight scar under right eye, and on left cheek near mouth ; right arm disfigured and bent from fracture at the elbow, sentenced to two years imprisonment at last session of Supreme Court for garotting. Montresser rearrested.
