At 10.30 a.m., of the Bth ult., two men named John Beid alias Maori Jack, and William Montressor, escaped from the new gaol, Hokitika. Beid alias Maori Jack, is a native of America, 27 years old, a sailor, 5 ft. in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, very dark, black hair, dark hazel eyes, slight scar under right eye, and on left cheek near mouth ; right arm disfigured and bent from fracture at the elbow, sentenced to two years imprisonment at last session of Supreme Court for garotting.
