The figures for European officers (local and other) represent mainly locally recruited officers of European status, but they also include a number of officers recruited outside the Territory who are not members of the New Zealand Public Service on secondment. Clerks, radio operators, draughtsmen, translators and interpreters, typists, office-assistants, and telephone-exchange attendants are employed under the same conditions and paid the same salaries, whether they are Samoans or Europeans. The number of public servants in these classes at 31st March, 1949, was 135. Of this total, 81 positions were held by Europeans and 54 by Samoans.
