The first general census of New Zealand population was taken in NovemberDecember, 1851, under the Census Ordinance of that year. This Ordinance provided for the taking of triennial censuses, although this particular provision with regard to triennial censuses was not implemented. Subsequent censuses were taken in 1858, 1861, 1864, 1867, 1871, 1874, 1878, and 1881, and thereafter at five-yearly intervals until 1926. Owing to the depression no census was taken in 1931, the next census being taken in 1936. No census wa's taken in 1941 owing to the war. The last census was taken in 1945. The following table gives a picture of total population at the various censuses, and shows, besides the total population, the numerical increase as between censuses, the percentage increase, and the annual rate of increase.
