MARINE DEPARTMENT —continued.

REMARKS. I (a) A greater number of lighthouses converted to electricity than anticipated. The power is generated by Diesel engines. (b) G.s.s. " Matai " engaged on special work. The extra cost was offset by increased credits-in-aid. (c) The vessel has now been transferred to another authority. (d) Stores and effects of lost on transfer by hazards of sea, &c. (e) Improved mail-service ty lighthouses. (/) Alterations at present under way. Cost heavier than at first anticipated. (g) Motor transport required to Cape Reinga Lighthouse ; a new station in place of Cape Maria Van Diemen, which has been closed down. (h) Extraordinary maintenance-cost of lighthouses brought to charge. (i) As the G.s.s. " Matai " has been transferred to another authority, this amount is required to service lighthouses by other means. (j ) As the G.s.s. " Matai " usually transported keepers on transfer and is not now available to the Marine Department, any transfers of lighthouse-keepers will be an extra cost to the Marine Department. (k) Number of officers, 14. Travelling-allowance, £16 ; motor-car allowance, £5 ; motor-car hire, £6 ; horse-hire, £3 ; rail and boat fares and launch-hire, £35. (I) Damage to private motor-vehicles, £6 ; compensation for damage to lightkeepers' stores, £1 : total, £7. (m) Apparatus not yet to hand, and as the item comprises capital expenditure it has been transferred to Public Works Fund.
