Timaru-Cromwell (No. 16 District). —Reconstruction has proceeded throughout the year on the Lindis Pass Deviation and improvements, 8J m. of new formation being carried out, together with 6m. of gravelling. This brings the completed work to within 4m. of the top of the pass. Miltonr-Queenstown (No. 16 District) : — The 70 ch. deviation necessitated by the construction of the Butcher's Creek Irrigation Dam was completed. The reconstruction of the Clyde - Cromwell Section was commenced, and by the 31st March 7 m. 50 ch. of formation and 3 m. of base-course metalling had been completed. Queenstown-Invercargill (No. 16 District) .—Kingston - Queenstown Section: A 6m. deviation between Fairlight and Kingston was formed and metalled. At the Queenstown end deviations and improvements were carried out through Frankton Township and for 1J m. south of the Kawarau Bridge, the total length being 2J m. Pu.keuri-Kurow-Omarama.—Realignment and widening were carried out at two bluffs near Kurow. Three concrete culverts, each of 10 ft. span, were constructed between Peebles and Georgetown. Palmerston-Clyde. —Waihemo County : Tenders were invited for a deviation of 48 ch. at the Red Cutting. St. Balkan's Loop. —The erection of Shepherds Creek Bridge, of one 35 ft. span, was completed. Kyeburn-Middlemarch.—A 15 ft. bridge was erected over Last Creek, and the Six-mile Creek Bridge is in hand. Port Chalmers - Aramoana.—so ch. in the Port Chalmers Borough was sealed in two coats. Dunedin-Gore (No. 17 District) : — Otokia-Henley : 88 ch. of plant-mix smoothing-coat was applied. Tokomairiro River Bridge, Clarksville : The renewal of this bridge is in hand. Lovell's Flat Level Crossing : A contract was let for the erection of an overbridge, and the approaches are in progress. Milton-Balclutha: Extensive improvements were commenced, and the formation well advanced over a length of 14 m. Balclutha Borough : 28 ch. was sealed in two coats. This work included the sealing of the approaches to the new Balclutha Bridge. Milton-Queenstown (No. 17 District) : — A combined culvert and concrete-lined tunnel has been constructed at Manuka Creek. Clarksville Level Crossing : A contract for an overbridge has been let, and work commenced. Balclutha-Papatowai.—The Purahaua Stream Bridge, 20 ft. long, was erected, and several sharp corners widened. Willowbank- Mathesons Corner (No. 17 District). —A deviation, 8 ch. in length, was constructed to obviate a dangerous corner near Heriot. Dunedin-PortobeUo-Otakou.—Pero's Corner: Realignment and widening were carried out for 3 ch. on either side of the corner. Green Island - Taieri Mouth.—A contract was let for the improvement and sealing of sm. 57 ch. between Green Island and Brighton. Reconstruction and the erection of the Kaikorai Stream Bridge, of four 30 ft. spans, are in hand. Waipahi-Pomahaka. —The Pomahaka Bridge was renewed by a 121 ft. hardwood truss span on pile piers. Dunedin-Gore (No. 18 District): — Pukerau-McNab : A deviation of sm. 27 ch., to avoid flooding, was commenced, and 21 ch. of formation completed. Bridge Inn - Dacre : A contract has been let for the reconstruction, prior to sealing, of 10 m. 45 ch. Invercargill-Bluff. —Tenders were invited for the reconstruction of 3 m. 76 ch. between Greenhills and Bluff. Invercargill-Queenstown (No. 18 District): — Cooper's Corner - Buxton Road : 1 m. 73 ch. of sealing was completed. Branxholm Level Crossing : A contract has been let for an overbridge at this crossing. Invercargill-Tuatapere.—2 m. of plant-mix smoothing-coat was applied. Lorne-Tuatapere. —Lorneville Level Crossing : The construction of an overbridge and approaches is in progress. Edendale-Wyndham-Mokoreta.—Wyndham Town District: 82 ch. was sealed in two coats. Lorne-Hedgehope.—A length of 92 ch. received a second sealing-coat. Dunn's Highway.—2 m. 34 ch. of first-coat sealing was applied.
