No. 301.—Petition of John Johnston and 3 Others, of Rangiora. (Second Report.) Petitionees pray for a refund of costs incurred in defence of a case while being members of the Mandeville and Rangiora Licensing Committee. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be- referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th October, 1911.

Special Report. I am directed to report that the Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the services of the clerk (Mr. E. D. Dunne), and that the Government be recommended to permanently appoint him, so that the Committee will be assured of his services and experience for future sessions. 19th October, 1911.

Final Report. I have the honour to report,— 1. That the Committee held 13 meetings during the session. 2. That the Committee dealt with 81 petitions (including 3 held over from last year). 3. That the number referred to the Government for consideration was 38. 4. That the number referred to the Government for favourable consideration was 27. 5. That the number on which the Committee had no recommendation to make was 14. 6. That the number of the petitions held over until next session was 5. I am also directed to report that this Committee desires to place on record the valuable services rendered by the Chairman (Mr. Reed). He has been most tactful in dealing with the various petitioners and their representatives, and hits been exceedingly zealous in his attention to the Committee work. 20th October, 1911.
