SlR >— Education Office, Timaru, Ist March, 1910. In accordance with the provisions of section 174 of the Education Act, 1908, I have the honour to submit the annual report of the Education Board of the District of South Canterbury for the year ending 31st December, 1909. The Board.—At the beginning of the year the Board consisted of the following members : Messrs. John Jackson (Chairman), <!. \Y. Armitage, \V. M. Hamilton. ('. S. Howard. William Lindsay, George Lyall, John Maze, J. S. Rutherford, and Thomas Sherratt. In accordance with the provisions of section 11 of the Education Act, 1908, Messrs. Lindsay, Maze, and Sherratl retired during the year'and all three were re-elected. Mr. John Jackson, for over twenty years a member of the Board, and for some years its Chairman, died in July, and his presence has been much missed by his colleagues. The Board passed a resolution expressive of the loss to education caused by his death, and appreciative of Ins sterling character and of his long and valuable services on the Board. Mr. \V. M. Hamilton was elected to succeed Mr. Jackson as Chairman of the Board, and Mr. (». .1. Sealey was elected to till the extraordinary vacancy. The Board held twenty meetings during the year, the average attendance being 8-1.
