The Belmont Dredge, which had been navigated down stream a distance of fifty miles, lies wrecked in the lagoon near the mouth of the river ; a flood had drifted shingle into the paddock, and when the waters subsided the dredge's back became broken. Some of the men are experienced miners, and it is understood that they are acting on behalf of Messrs. Bertram and Co., a'Dunedin syndicate formed for the purpose of prospecting for a formation of greenstone (nephrite) which is believed to occur at an altitude of 1,600 ft. above sea-level, on the north-western terminal slope of Mitre Peak.TThe face of the mountain is very steep, and a large landslip which occurred in bygone days brought down fragments and boulders of greenstone, pieces of which have been picked up on the beach at low water for many years past.
