Enclosure. Western Pacific, (No. 49.) Office of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, Sir,— Suva, Fiji, 12th September, 1898. With reference to your telegram, received on the 31st ultimo, on the subject of the appointment of Major Gudgeon as British Eesident at Earotonga, I have the honour to report that, in accordance with the instructions contained therein, I have, by instrument under my hand and the seal of the Western Pacific High Commission, appointed that officer to be a Deputy Commissioner to exercise the jurisdiction of the High Commissioner's Court for the Cook Islands under the provisions of the Pacific Order in Council, 1893.
