LAND-TAX AND INCOME-TAX: PARTICULARS OF VARIOUS AMOUNTS OF TAXATION COLLECTED.

Return, to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 28th, October, 1898. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the following particulars for each of the years 1893 to 1898: (a) The amount of income-tax paid by companies, and the amount received from other sources; (6) the amount received as absentee-tax; (c) as ordinary land-tax ; and (d) as graduated tax."—(Mr. O'Rkgan.)

Land-tax.

The exemption of all improvements is responsible for the decrease in the land-tax in 1893-94, and the shrinkage in subsequent years is attributable largely to the purchase of certain estates by the Crown.
