EDUCATION: NATIVES EMPLOYED TEACHING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 2nd August, 1898. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the number of persona of both sexes of the Native race employed in the public schools, both Native and European, —(1) As pupil-teachers in training; (2) as assistant teachers ; and (3) as teachers in sole charge of public schools. This return to be for the year ending the 31st December, 1897."—(Mr. Mebedith.)

Department of Education, Wellington, 26th August, 1898. Maori Teachers. 1. Ebturns obtained from Education Boards show that there are no members of the Native race employed as teachers in public schools. 2. In Native schools under the control of the Education Department no pure Maori is employed as a teacher. Of teachers of mixed races the following is a numerical statement: — (1.) Pupil-teachers : Nil. (2.) Assistants : Three half-caste and two between European and half-caste. (3.) In charge of schools : Two half-caste. Addendum.—ln boarding-schools receiving subsidy from the Government there are two halfcaste pupil-teachers, one Maori assistant, one half-caste assistant, and one half-caste head-teacher. W. Jas.
