Having replaced "Monowai" with " Arawa" we can guarantee better all-round speed, and will accept Postmaster-General's offer of renewal of contract for three years. Eepresentations have been made to Oceanic Company with regard to providing better sorting accommodation on " Alameda and " Marip'osa' , " and, if possible, some improvement will be made , although, as you are aware, in consequence of the design and arrangements of these ships, little in this direction is practicable. We cannot undertake to deliver the mails in less than twenty days in the present condition of trade, as to do so would involve very heavy additional cost in running, which the support afforded by the Government does not justify We are prepared, however, to negotiate to shorten the time by one day if sufficient inducement is forthcoming.
