SCHEDULE No. 4. Special Oases tjndeb Existing Acts. Eetuen of Claims which have been held over as Special Cases, reserved for Consideration and Action, Auckland District. Private John Hill, Auckland Rifle Volunteers : Claim rejected under subsection 2 of section 10, Act of 1889, and section 7, Act of 1891, as having already received scrip for this service. Scrip for £5. Midshipman A. J. Ketly, Indian Navy : Claim rejected, as there was no evidence in support of intention to settle in New Zealand. Plea for delay in coming to the colony after retirement (which claimant states he had resolved upon, on account of ill-health, 1861) is, that Mr. Ketly was visiting his friends in Queensland and New South Wales. Major James Walmesley, Colonial Defence Force : Claim rejected under subsection 2 of section 10, Act of 1889, and section 7, Act of 1891, as having already received land as " retired military officer." The Commissioner of Crown Lands remarks on this and the next cases : " Major Walmesley and Captain Pye, V.C., richly deserve being rewarded for the great services rendered to this country." Captain Charles Pye, V.C., Colonial Defence Force : Claim rejected on the same ground as the foregoing, and same remarks apply. These two claims come under the promise made by the Hon. T. B. Russell, Minister of Defence. Commissary-General J. Bailey, C.8., C. Staff Corps, Imperial Service : Claim rejected under subsection 2, section 2, Act of 1889, as a period of nine years elapsed between date of retirement from the service and return to the colony, where claimant had married. In explanation, it is stated that the claimant was delayed in consequence of his connection with a Mr. Perkins in perfecting an invention for working high-pressure steam.
