CENSUS OF NEW ZEALAND, APRIL, 1891.

Eegistrar-General's Office, Wellington, 19th August, 1891. The population of the colony, according to the Census of the sth April, is shown in the first of the tables presented herewith. Its distribution in counties and interior boroughs is given in Table 11., and in Table 111. the particulars for the various ridings, road a7id town districts. A further table is added showing the populations of the wards in the different boroughs, and the suburbs of the principal cities. Wm. E. B. Bbown, Eegistrar-General.

(*) Not including 1,134 persons, officers and crews of six British men-of-war, and 365 persons, officers and crew of the Austrian warship s.s. " Saida." (*>) The Maori population of the colony, according to the results of a separate census taken in March (and including 210 Maori wives of Europeans) last was—males, 22,633; females, 18,890: total, 41,523. Thus, the total population of the colony (including Maoris) was—males, 355,510; females, 312,671: total, 668,181.
