EXTEACT PEOM THE EEPOET OF THE MINISTEE OF EDUCATION FOE 1885. Twenty -thbee secondary schools have furnished reports, which will be printed in full in another paper (E.-9). Most of them are under a legal obligation to make an annual report, but this is not the case with Nelson College (affiliated to the University of New Zealand), Wanganui Endowed School, Wellington College, or Christ's College Grammar School. Whangarei High School has been closed for some time. " The New Zealand State Forests Act, 1885," gives power to utilise its resources for the purpose of a School of Forestry, and the matter is now under the consideration of the Government. Steps have not yet been taken under the several local Acts to establish high schools at Wanganui, Greymouth, Hokitika, and Gisborne. Particulars as to staff, salaries, attendance, and fees are stated in the following table :—
