1878. NEW ZEALAND.

MEETING WITH REWI. (NOTES OF A MEETING BETWEEN THE HON. THE PREMIER, THE HON. THE NATIVE MINISTER, AND REWI MANIAPOTO, AT PUNIU, MAY 12TH, 1878.)

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of Sis Excellency.

Present: Sir Geobge Gbey, Hon. Mr. SnEEHAjr, Mr. Eoss, Mr. Gbace, Eewi Mamapoto, and other Maniapoto Chiefs. Sir George Grey asked Eewi: " Have you heard what has taken place at Hikurangi?" Bewi: I have. Sir George Grey : " Have you heard all that took place on both days ?" Bewi ■. Tea ; my brother brought mo a report of all that took place up to the time when Tawhiao agreed to take your (Sir George Grey's) proposals iv writing, and that he (Tawhiao) would consider them. Sir George Grey : " What do you think of the result of the meeting with. Tawhiao ?" Bewi: " E pai ana, na korua na hoki ko Tawhiao." [Translation: It is well; was it not done by you and Tawhiao ?] [Here a conversation on matters of no importance took place, but during which Eewi stated that he was going to Mokau, and thence to Waitara, where a large meeting would take place. He went on to say that some years ago Wi Tako, Matene te Whiwhi, and Meto Kingi had wished him to agree to a large meeting being held at Waitara, to which proposal he would not consent. But now, he considered, was the time for that meeting to take place, as you (Sir George Grey) and Tawhiao have met and come to an understanding.] Sir George Grey: "Are you then pleased," or "do you then agree, with what has taken place at the meeting at Hikurangi?" Bewi: "Am I not going to visit the 'pous' in my district, and to hold a meeting at Waitara?" Sir George Grey : "_E pai ana o whakaaro ki nga korero ote hui ki Hikurangi ?" [Translation : Do you approve of what was said at the meeting at Hikurangi ?] Bewi: Ac. [Eewi here again referred to the meeting to be held at Waitara. Ho said: " The meeting will take place in June, but I cannot give the precise day. I wish you to be present; Wi Tako, Matene te Whiwhi, and Mete Kingi will attend. You (Sir George Grey) should be present, as the meeting i» of importance." After further conversation it was agreed that when Eewi arrived at Mokau, he would send a telegram to Sir George Grey, and inform him of the exact day on which the meeting would take place.]
