I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No 99, of the 2nd of August, forwarding a printed report of the Einancial Statement delivered in the House of Representatives, on the 29th of July last, by the Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 94, of the 27th of July last, forwarding a copy of the Address with which you opened the Session of the New Zealand Institute for 1869, and also copies of the first volume of the Transactions and Proceedings of the Institute, containing much valuable information. No. 21. Copy of a DESPATCH from the Right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Governor Sir G. E. Bowen, G.C.M.G. (No. 120.) Sir, — Downing Street, 4th November, 1869. I referred, for the consideration of the Secretary of State for War, a copy of your Despatch No. 67, of the 7th of June last, enclosing a Memorandum by Mr. Stafford respecting the claim of the Government of New Zealand on account of expenses incurred in the maintenance of military prisoners in the Colonial gaols to the Ist of April, 1869. I transmit to you, for your information, the enclosed copy of a letter which I have received from the War Office in reply, from which you will perceive that the amount, £1,617 13s. 10d., claimed on this account, has been placed to the credit of the Colony in their accounts with the War Office. Enclosure to No. 21. Lord Noetiibeook to Undee Seceetaey of State, Colonial Office. Sib,— War Office, 2nd November, 1869. I am directed by Mr. Secretary Cardwell to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th August last, respecting the claim preferred by the Colonial Government of New Zealand on account of expenses incurred in the maintenance of military prisoners in Colonial gaols during the period from the Ist January, 1861, to the Ist April, 1869. In reply, I am directed to inform you that Mr. Secretary Cardwell has been in communication with the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury on the subject, and that the sum of £1,617 13s. 10d., —being the amount (£1,682 13s. 4d.) claimed by tho Colony, less the sum of £64 19s. 6d. for supply of medicines and surgical instruments, —has now been placed to tho credit of tho Colony in their accounts with this Office.
