To His Excellency Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard, C.8., the Officer ADMINISTERING THE GOVERNMENT OF TIIE ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND. The Petition of the undersigned- Officers, and others in the employment of the General Government of the Colony, respectfully Sheweth, — That in consequence of the present high, and still increasing, rate of food, clothing, lodging, &c., your Petitioners find it difficult to provide themselves with the necessaries of life. That many of your Petitioners being married men, with large families, find these hardships press with such severity upon them as to render it impossible for them on their present salaries to keep free from debt. That many of your Petitioners have been members of the Government for many years, some since the first establishment of the Colony, and while they have witnessed the increase of the Public Revenue, and the growing success of their fellow Colonists, they have themselves in nowise derived any advantage from the general prosperity. That your Petitions have seen that in the neighbouring colonies under similar circumstances the Colonial Governments have afforded relief to their Officers. Your Petitioners therefore pray that your Excellency will be pleased to forward this, their Petition, to the House of Representatives, accompanied with such recommendation as you may deem their case merits, in order that when the Estimates for the General Expenditure are under consideration some provision may be made to meet their urgent necessities. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, &c. G.Elliott Elliott, Ist Clerk Colonial Secretary's Thomas Sanders, Clerk Resident Magistrate's Office. Court. James Elliott, 2nd Clerk Col.
