1950 NEW ZEALAND

CANTEEN FUND BOARD (REPORT OF THE) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th SEPTEMBER, 1949

Presented to Both Houses of the General Assembly Pursuant to Section 41 of the Patriotic and Canteen Funds Act, 1947

The Hon. the Minister of Internal Affairs, Parliament Buildings, Wellington. The Canteen Fund Board has the honour to present its report and balance-sheet for the year ended 30th September, 1949, in accordance with section 41 of the Patriotic and Canteen Funds Act, 1947. INTRODUCTION During the past year the Canteen Fund Board, in conjunction with the New Zealand Patriotic Fund Board, made considerable progress in connection with several projects in regard to war veterans' homes. In the report of the Board for the period ended 30th September, 1948, it was stated that the Boards had agreed to establish two homes—one in the North Island and the other in the South Island. North Island Home. —This home is to be located at Okoroire, midway between Hamilton and Rotorua, on an area of 120 acres of farm lands. Of this area 50 acres were a magnificent gift to the Boards by Mr. N. L. Higginson of Okoroire. The balance of 70 acres was acquired in order to provide adequate land for the production of foodstuffs. &nd to make the home substantially self-supporting. A considerable amount of preliminary work has been carried out by a local committee, such as tree and orchard planting, fencing, and the damming of a stream to form a lake. An architectural competition for designs for the buildings to be erected on the land has been launched, open to all architects who are ex-servicemen and members of the New Zealand Institute of Architects resident in New Zealand. This competition closes in April, 1950.

South Island Home. —Negotiations are in progress for the acquisition of a suitable site, in the vicinity of Christchurch, on which to erect this home. Auckland Veterans' Home. —The Board, with the New Zealand Patriotic Fund Board, is negotiating for the purchase of this home, situated at Three Kings, Auckland. The home, which has been in operation for a number of years, has been catering for the needs of veterans of the South African and the 1914-18 wars. It is intended that the Auckland Veterans' Home Board shall continue the conduct of the home for a period of fifteen years, and that men of the 1939-45 war shall also be eligible for admission. WELFARE WORK Qualified Social Service Workers. —The Board, in conjunction with the New Zealand Patriotic Fund Board, has decided, after an investigation of the work of the Social Service Department in Australia, to include on their staff persons holding the Diploma of Social Science, whose duty it will be to visit discharged servicemen and their dependants in their homes, with a view to assisting them in their many problems, whether financial or otherwise. One appointment has been made, and bursaries are to be provided for two other discharged servicewomen to enable them to take a two-year course in social science at Victoria University College, Wellington. Financial Assistance.—During the year the Board expended the sum of £620 on financial assistance to ex-servicemen. FINANCIAL The Canteen Fund Board derived its funds from the Canteen Board which operated in the camps, air and naval stations during the war, the total amount received from this source being £801,665. APPRECIATION The Board desires to express its appreciation of the co-operation and assistance it has received from Government Departments, ex-service organizations, &c., with which it has been associated. It also desires to thank its office staff. For and on behalf of the Canteen Fund Board. A. H. Gibson, Secretary.
