REPORT

PART I—FRIENDLY SOCIETIES Legislation The Friendly Societies Amendment Act, 1948, amends the Friendly Societies Act, 1909, as follows: Sections 11 (2) and 51 (1). —The maximum annuity for which a member may contribute is increased from £52 to £lO4 per annum. Section 33.—The maximum charge for a demand copy of rules is increased from Is. to 2s. 6d. Section 55. —Provision is made to allow a branch, with the consent of its central body, to also operate a loan fund, and the maximum allowable interest in a loan fund is increased from £2OO to £3OO. Sections 60 (1) and (2) and 63.—The requirement of a second general meeting to confirm a special resolution is deleted.

Registrations There were registered during the year two new societies and two new branches, as follows—l.O.O.F.: Pride of Morrinsville Lodge. H.A.C.8.5.: St. Mary's Branch No. 955, Hokitika (N.Z. District). 1.F.5.: Winstone Limited Employees' Sick and Accident Society. S.A.S.: Taihape Hibernian Credit Union. The following registrations were cancelled by request—M.U.l.O.O.F.: Takapau Lodge (Hawkes Bay District) and Mokai Lodge (Auckland District). 1.0.0. F.: Tengawai, St. Kilda, Okaiawa, Waiwhetu, and Pride of Karori Lodges. A.0.F.: Court Bloomfield (Wellington District). U.A.0.D.: Pride of Mataura Lodge (G-rand Lodge of Otago and Southland). 1.0. R.: Hope of Ormondville, Star of "Wakefield, Brightwater, Hope of Addington, and Kiwi Tents (N.Z. Central District). 1.F.5.: Wairarapa District Friendly Societies Hospital Association. Three amalgamations were registered—M.U.l.O.O.F.: Nil Desperandum Lodge with Oxford Lodge (Ashley District), Jubilee Lodge with Riccarton Lodge (North Canterbury District). A.0.F.: Court Victoria with Court Woodford (Canterbury United District). One instrument of dissolution was registered—l.F.S.: The Waimate United Friendly Societies' Dispensary. One registration was cancelled on secession—A.O.F.: Court Pride of Eltham (Taranaki District). The following change of name was registered—l.F.S.: '' The Canterbury (N.Z.) Seed Company, Limited, Employees' Sick and Benefit Friendly Society " to " The Canterbury (N.Z.) Seed and Malting Companies' Sick and Benefit Society." There were 1,031 registrations at 31st December, 1948.

Amendments of Rules The rules of fifty-six societies and branches were amended during 1948, six by complete amendment, and fifty by partial amendment. The total funds of the societies and branches as at 31st December, 1948, amounted to £6,568,039, made up as follows: Sick and Funeral Funds (inclusive of amounts transferred to special funds out of surplus), £6,018,076; Medical and Management Funds, goods, &c., £549,963. Dividing the total funds by the number of members at the end of the year it is found the average capital per member is now £B5 3s.

The following statement shows the disposal of the total funds (including those of the central bodies) as at the 31st December, 1948.

Sickness The number of members sick during 1948 was 15,410, equal to 20-4 per 100 members at risk. The sickness experienced during 1948 was 324,077 weeks, •equal to 21 weeks per sick member and 4 weeks 2 days for each member at risk. * The word " lodge " when applied to all societies is to be understood as embracing the synonymous-terms "court," "tent," &c., as used in the various orders.

Mortality The number of members who died during 1948 was 1,192, equal to 15-2 per 1,000 members at risk. The number of wives of members who died was 320. Sick and Funeral Funds The contributions and entrance fees paid to Sick' and Funeral Funds in 1948 amounted to £162,048. Divided by the mean number of members, the average for 1948 was £2 Is. Bd., as against £1 18s. for 1947. The interest and rent received by the lodges and central bodies amounted to £223,861 in 1948, equal to £2 17s. 6d. per member, as against £2 15s. lOd. for 1947. The amount of sickness benefit paid was £176,032 in 1948, equal to £ll Bs. 6d. per member sick and £2 ss. 3d. per member, as against £ll 2s. sd. and £2 4s. sd. respectively for 1947. Viewing the amount paid in relation to the weeks of sickness, the average benefit per week is found to be 10s. lOd. in 1948, as against 10s. lid. for 1947. The funeral benefit paid amounted to £65,222 in 1948, equal to 16s. 9d. per member, as compared with 16s. for 1947. The total worth of the Sick and Funeral Funds at the beginning of 1948 was £5,242,722, and at the end of the year £5,324,018. Investment of Funds The net income from investments credited to the Sick and Funeral Funds for 1948 amounted to £223,861, the average rate being £4 6s. 7d. per cent., as against £4 7s. 6d. in 1947. PART lI—TRADE-UNIONS There were three unions on the register at the end of the year.
