No. 62/1947 —Petition of D. E. Bradney, of Auckland Praying for additional compensation in respect of the acquisition of a ship by the Crown. No. 27—Petition of Helensville District Racing Club, Incorporated Praying for the grant to the club of a licence to operate a totalizator at its meetings. v I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and has no recommendation to make. 18th August, 1948.

No. 35 —Petition of H. F. B. Winstone, of Auckland Praying for a reassessment and a refund of succession duty. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 25th August, 1948.

No. 39—Petition of J. Greenwood and Others Praying for the introduction of legislation providing for the compulsory use of humane Trilling methods in abattoirs and slaughterhouses. I have the honour to report that the member who presented this petition having expressed, on behalf of the petitioners, a desire to withdraw the same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. Ist September, 1948.

No. 40—Petition of A. S. Dawson and Others Praying for an amendment to the Servicemen's Settlement and Land Sales Act, 1943, exempting sales of certain building sections from its provisions. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and has no recommendation to make. Ist September, 1948.

N o> 44—Petition of Kathleen I. Clarke and Others Praying for the establishment and conduct of a State lottery in New Zealand. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and has po recommendation to make in view of the fact that the Gaming Commission s report is before the Government for consideration. Ist September, 1948.

No. 24—Petition of Margaret 0. B. L. L. Douglas Praying for full investigation into circumstances connected with the execution of a deed and subsequent proceedings for relief from further payments under the deed, and if special legislation is recommended, that consideration be given to its early introduction. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and has no recommendation to make. The Committee, however, is of the opinion that the implementation of the Legal Aid Act would be of great assistance, to petitioner and others in a similar position. 30th September, 1948.

No. 57—Petition of Clara P. James and Others Praying for amendment to the fair rents and social security legislation providing that age-beneficiaries be given the right to regain possession of their house properties if for their own occupation, and that a reasonable sum in respect of board and lodgings be allowed as a deduction from rent received by such age-beneficiaries during the period they are unable to regain possession of their own homes. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 6th October, 1948.

No. 64—Petition of L. M. Estcourt Praying for relief on account of alleged wrongful dismissal from the Public Service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and has no recommendation to make. 6th October, 1948.

No. 125/1947— Petition of J. G. Casey (supported by the Rangiora Returned Services Association, Incorporated) Praying for relief from the terms of an agreement entered into with the Public Trustee. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 21st October, 1948.

Hodson and Others (being officers of the Council of Combined Animal Welfare Organizations of New Zealand) and Others Praying for the introduction of legislation providing for tie compulsory use of humane killing methods in abattoirs and slaughterhouses. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 21st October, 1948.
