NATIVE DEPARTMENT

(a) Board and lodging allowances at award rates are necessary to supplement the rates of pay received during the training period. The allowances are recoverable at any time the trainees are engaged on constructional work charged to housing loan accounts. (b) This expenditure is under the control of the Department of Agriculture, by whom the additional estimate is submitted. £B,OOO provided on main estimates. (c) Provision made on main estimates £2,000. (d) The consolidation of the Native Land Acts was last made in 1931 and the need for a further consolidation is increasingly evident. (e) The investigation is a preliminary to a more extensive inquiry which is under consideration. (/) Provision for the cost of experimental work undertaken for the purpose of supplying data concerning the establishment of effective shelter-belts, &c. (g) Costs of experiments in forms of construction or installations re Maori housing in cases where such experiments result in a total cost in excess of that of standard methods. (h) The petition by the lessees established their rights to compensation for improvements effected. Reimbursement of the legal expenses which it was necessary for them to incur in establishing their claim to relief now provided for.
