WORK PROGRESSES

KINDERGARTEN CONFERENCE The biennial conference of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union, held in Wellington, was attended by representatives of Dunedin, Invercargill, Hokitika, Timaru, Christchurch, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Masterton and Hastings associations. Mrs J. A. Doctor, Dominion president, was in the chair at all sessions of the conference which lasted four days. Reports showed that the work was growing rapidly, Wellington had nine schools, and two new ones had been opened. Johnsonville had recently raised £2250 in a monster effort to open a Kindergarten there, and Ngaio was inaugurating a similar effort Lower Hutt had three schools, with further extensions under contemplation, while Upper Hutt was planning comprehensive kindergarten and community services as a war memorial. At Taranaki Street, Wellington, a nursery school had been in operation as a war measure, and it was hoped that the service would be continued, to serve as a useful adjunct in the student training work. The one at Petone w r as to revert to kindergarten work Christchurch had 13 Kindergartens, with a combined roll of 620 and a waiting list of 200, and they were training five extra students whose fees 1 they were paying. Dunedin had opened two new Kindergartens ! and were working in conjunction with the Plunket Society. A bursary had been established for students and a post-graduate course arranged at the university.
