SNAKE IDENTIFIED

POISONOUS SPECIES The snake found curled round the branch of a tree in Church Street, Te Aroha recently has been identified by the Auckland War Memorial Museum as a ringed sea-snake, a poisonous species which is stated to be fairly common in the Pacific islands. The tree on which the snake was found stood beside a small creek that submerges to proceed under the main street. The snake, which was alive when discovered, was marked in dull brown and silver with a beautiful sheen. How the snake could have reached Te Aroha is not known, but it is considered unlikely that it could have swum there. The reptile was three feet long and about the thickness of a man’s thumb.
