Long Council Meeting Last night’s meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was the most prolonged of the year. It was 12.22 this morning when the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, declared the meeting closed. Bicycle Stand Declined A request from the Hamilton Y.W.C.A. for the erection of a bicycle stand near its club rooms in Victoria Street was declined at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. It was pointed out that the space available in front of the chief post office is not usually fully occupied. Presbyterian Missions It was reported at the last meeting of the Waikato Presbytery that during the past year £2442 had been raised by the churches in the presbytery toward the Missions budget of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, and that the amount required for the coming year was £2575, which is equivalent to 14s Id per member. Pensioners’ Housing The Hamilton and District Beneficiaries’ Association and the National Council of Women, which expressed a desire to send a deputation to the Hamilton Borough Council regarding pensioners’ housing, will be informed that the council is of the opinion that it is little use meeting them in view of the unsurmountable difficulties the council has experienced in endeavouring to arrange suitable buildings at a reasonable cost. Crowing Roosters “You can’t stop roosters crowing any more than you can stop councillors talking,” said Mr A. J. Denz at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night when questioning the advisability of a returned serviceman being allowed to establish a poultry farm at Brookfield Street, Hamilton East. “Roosters will not wake the dead,” observed Mr Arthur Fow, recalling that the cemetery is in the vicinity. The council decided in favour of the proposal. Traffic In Borough Recommendations from the transport committee were adopted by a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. The committee had discussed certain traffic regulalions and by-laws with two representatives of the Drivers’ Union. The council decided to raise with Buses Limited the question of the size of bus stops. Inspectors will be instructed to deal with any cases which come under their notice where failure to observe the right-hand rule or to give the required signals occur. The committee will consider the question of removing all buses from Victoria Street. Greater Hamilton A statement made by Mr W. R. Shattock to the effect that nothing had been done in regard to making a Greater Hamilton, embracing certain areas in the adjoining counties, was described as incorrect by the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. The engineers were working on the proposals one or two days a week and the Town Clerk, Mr W. L. Waddel, was preparing a report. To make Hamilton a greater town was very much more difficult than talking about it. The adjoining county councils would have to agree to any proposals put forward. Paeroa-Pokeno Railway “There will be no delay in completing the Paeroa-Pokeno line and we are going on with the job just as soon as the manpower is available,” said the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, in the House of Representatives yesterday when the departmental estimates were under discussion. The point was raised by Mr A. S. Sutherland (Opposition— Hauraki), who mentioned that £II,OOO had been provided in the Estimates. When completed the line would serve a most valuable purpose in carrying large quantities of fertiliser, stock and general goods. He hoped that as soon as manpower was available this job would be completed.
