DROWNING RESCUE

FOUR CHILDREN SAVED NURSE TO BE DECORATED Information Yi&s been received that a nurse erf the Waikato Hospital, Miss Eileen Austin, is to be decorated by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, in Hamilton on November 23 in recognition of her action in saving the lives of four children from drowning at Tonga. The rescue occurred in December, 1943, when the ship on which a party of school children from New Zealand was returning to Fiji called in at Tonga. The children after a picnic went for a swim but got into difficulties because of a strong undertow. Miss Austin, who was also a passenger on the ship returning to her home in Fiji, at great risk to her own life saved four of the children, with the assistance of Miss Peggy Bogle and two Tongans, suffering injuries to herself on the coral reef. Miss Austin is a daughter of Dr Austin, 0.8. E. of Makogai Island.
