TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES ROXY THEATRE Out of the Atlantic, graveyard of a thousand ships, comes “Crash Dive,” the first picture of underseas fighting to be produced in America since Pearl Harbour. Tyrone Power has the starring role in this technicolour production as a junior officer aboard a submarine, and Anno Baxter supplies the romantic interest. M.G.M.’s astronomical comedy, “The Heavenly Body.” Is a light-hearted offering in which William Powell is cast as a brilliant young astronomer. As the disadvantage of his profession is that he must needs work at night his lovely wife (Hedy Lbmarr) feels neglected and she turns to astrology with amusing results. REGENT THEATRE Three young people of exceptional merit—Van Johnson, June Allyson and Gloria de Haven—have the leading roles in “Two Girls and a Sailor,” and they have the support of some of fllmdom’s leading entertainers. Th* famous pianist Jose Iturbi, who was first seen in “Thousands Cheer,” makes a welcome re-ap-pearance, wliile a highlight is a “Piano Concerto Tor the Index Finger.” in which Gracie Allen successfully combats Albert Coates and a sympnony orchestra. AS an old vaudeville star who has fallen on evil times the* comedian Jimmy Durante gives a remarkable penormanee. A FitzPatriok travel talk is a reature of the supporting programme. BTATE THEATRE For the first time dancing as well as skating Sonja Ilenie returns to the screen in “Wintertime.” Set against the splendour of Canada, the story is of an enterprising young hotel owner (Cornel Wilde) who tries through the aid or his optimistic partner (Jack Oakie) to bring a wealthy .Norwegian and his attractive niece to enhance the reputation of his resort. Several new melodies, especially written for the film, are played by Woody Herman and bis band. Patsy Kelly and Mary Brian have the leading roles in •Danger! Women At Work,” which will also be screened. CIVIC THEATRE “ Summer Storm ” is the exciting screen version of Anton Chekhov's “ The Shooting Party,” a story of jealousy and murder in the days of Czarist Russia. George Sanders and Linda Darnell have the leading roles and they receive good support from Edward Everett Horton and Anna Lee. In its tense drama the film achieves much of the compelling effect of “ Wuthering Heights ” and “ Rebecca." Highlights of the supporting programme are Fox Australian News and the weekly New Zealand Review No. 207, featuring the recent march of 10,000 people on Parliament Buildings, Wellington. THEATRE ROYAL How the jittery “ Glldy ” tries to avoid romantic entanglements with an eccentric widow and an avaricious chorus girl provides the basis of RKO Radio’s new offering, “Gildersleeve on Broadway,” Harold Peary, Billie Burke, Claire Carleton, Richard LeGrand and Freddie Mercer head the cast. Roy Rogers, rapidly becoming Hollywood’s most popular Western star, has the leading role in “Song of Texas.” Both features will be shown at Saturday’s matinee. Preston Sturges’ latest comedy, “ Hail the Conquering Hero,” will begin its Hamilton season on Saturday night.
