VOLUNTARY AIDS RETURN

ALL ORIGINAL 51 NOW BACK Of the 51 voluntary aids from Auckland who were selected In December, 1941, to go to the Middle East, all have now returned to the Dominion. The last four to get home were Miss Joyce Buckley, Miss Ruby Monteith, Miss Ena Meharry and Miss Gwenyr. Evans, who reached Wellington last week-end after having been overseas for three years and eight months Three of the voluntary aids, Misses Buckley, Meharry and Monteith, carried out nursing duties, being first stationed in Egypt and later in Italy. Miss Buckley was at the New Zealand hospital in Bari for six months, after a period in Egypt, and later was transferred to the Casualty clearing station in the front line for four months. She then returned to No. 1 General Hospital at Sengalia. Miss Meharry was first at No. 1 and then No. 3 General Hospital and Miss Monteith at No. 2 Hospital. Miss Evans was on the administration staff of No. 2 General Hospital, where she did clerical duties. An Auckland trained nurse, Charge Sister Eileen Pegler, also arrived at Wellington in the same ship. For 22 months Sister Pegler travelled on the hospital ship Maunganui. In 1943 ! she went to Egypt and then trans- ; ferred to No. 1 General Hospital in Italy. Sister Pegler, who was on the staff of the Auckland Hospital i before leaving for overseas, is home I on furlough.
