HIGHWAY TO KAWHIA

TRADES COUNCIL APPROVAL The Waikato Trades Council, at its monthly meeting, considered the construction of a highway between • Hamilton and Kawhia via Te Pahu i and the Oparau Valley, and it was | unanimously decided to sponsor a petition which has been introduced by residents in the Kawhia and adjoining districts. j Many of the attractive features of i the proposal were mentioned by i speakers at the meeting, the one of , most immediate importance from ; the Trades Council’s viewpoint being | the great benefit that would come to : the large number of affiliated mem- ! bers of the Federation of Labour, 1 and, indeed, all workers in the area j concerned. By the establishment ; of a road to the sea coast it would : be possible for the families of work- | ers to enjoy more frequent trips to a | safe and commodious coastal resort. Transport of Goods

j It is understood that the proposed j road would bring the township of j Kawhia within about an hour and a J quarter of Hamilton, by car travel, I and, apart from the purely recrea- | tional value, the boon to the busi- ! ness section of Hamilton and other j nearby centres in the way of transport i of goods from the south via the port of Kawhia requires no emphasis. As ! an example, coal from the South IsS land could be transported direct j from Westport to Kawhia, discharged | almost straight into trucks and de- | livered to its destination in the Wai- ! kato within a few hours.

! The Trades Council is recommend- ' ing all members of trades unions to | sign the petition to the Minister of ! Works, and also to urge all others j with whom they may be associated to ; follow suit.
