NOTED MUSICIAN

CONDUCTOR OF ORCHESTRA M. de ROSE’S CAREER One of the most noted musicians in the Dominion, M. B. L. H. de Rose, formerly conductor of the Dominion Symphony Orchestra and of the 4YA Concert Orchestra, was recently appointed conductor to the new Hamilton Civic Orchestra. M. de Rose was bom in Russia in 1883, though he is a British subject by naturalisation. He graduated at Gesellschaft der Musicfreunde at the Vienna Conservatorium in 1902, where he studied the violin under Josef Hellsmesberger and Gruen, and composition under Professor Fuchs. Under his graduation, M. de Rose obtained a position as assistant conductor of the orchestra at the Karl Theatre, in Vienna, which he held until his departure for New York in 1904. There he was connected with the orchestra at the New York Metropolitan Opera House, one of the most famous in the world, as first violin, and later as assistant conductor. Engagements in England In 1907 M de Rose went to England, where he held many important engagements, including a term as conductor _of the 'East Lancashire Symphony*Orchestra, with which Mr Anderson Tyrer, whose tour of New Zealand is still fresh in the memory of music lovers, was connected. Later M. de Rose toured South Africa as conductor to the Thomas Quinlan Opera Company, and he was also conductor for six seasons at the Teatro Colon, in Buenos Aires, an opera house which is renowned all over the world for its presentations. Other engagements which have been held by M. de Rose include a term as conductor to the George Edward’s “Merry Widow” Company in London in 1907 and 1908, and a four years’ tour of the United States and Canada as conductor for Paramount Productions (Incorporated). He was also guest conductor to the famous Orquesta Filarmonica in Buenos Aires in 1922. Large Musical Library j M. de Rose has gradually built up an impressive musical library, and he now has at his disposal more than 12,000 compositions, many of which have been heard during recent-years by Dunedin music-lovers. The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, which was under M. de Rose’s care, is now probably the finest combination in the country. Mr Ronald Chamberlain, who was in New Zealand a short time ago, as examiner for the Trinity College of Music, London, said he was amazed to find such an orchestra in New Zealand. It would, in his opinion, be a credit to any English city, except London or Manchester, whose resources are, of course, infinitely greater.
