MAN SHOT IN BACK
INVESTIGATION BY POLICE TARAWERA DISTRICT INCIDENT Police officers are investigating a report that a man had been shot in the Tarawera Lake district, 40 miles from Rotorua. Early this morning Norman Newton reported to the Rotorua police that at about 4 p.m. yesterday he heard a rifle shot in the bush near where he worked. On investigation he found a fellow workman named Chris McDonald, aged about 50 years, tying seriously wounded. McDonald had been shot in the back and the bullet had come out through the injured man’s arm. • Mr Newton and others gave what assistance they could until about 3 a.m. today. As the shooting appeared suspicious and Mr McDonald’s condition was critical he left for Rotorua to report to the police. A party of police lead by SubInspector M. J. Angland and Detec-tive-Sergeant J. White and including a number of constables left immediately for the scene in company with Mr Newton. The scene is in a remote localiy and further details are not expected for some time.
