MANPOWER COMMITMENTS
CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT Speaking at St. Andrew’s Hall, Claudelands, Mr John A. Lee, Democratic Labour candidate, severely criticised the Hon. Walter Nash for his statement on manpower and war commitments. Ho said it was obvious that the Government did not have a policy but was waiting for someone to make up its mind. Meanwhile New Zealand’s manpower was severely over-committed and no one knew what was intended. ‘‘The world contains no stranger story than that of the Labour Government toward the question of conscription and the use of our manpower,” said Mr “How does it happen that a Government, a large proportion of which were war-re-sisters in the last war, has so overcommitted the manpower of New Zealand? I am an enthusiastic supporter of the war, but I think our manhood is entitled to the same chance of survival as the mankind of other lands,” he added. Mr Lee said the Democratic Labour Party stood for the democratic way of life; economic democracy as well as political democracy.
