SPEEDWAY PROPOSED

DEPUTATION TO DOMAIN BOARD With a view to establishing a speedway track for motor-cycle and car racing a deputation representing a Hamilton syndicate in the process of being formed waited on the Hamilton Domain Board to discuss the possibility of securing a portion of Galloway Park. Hamilton East. As a result it was decided that the syndicate should be met by the board's sports committee and the chairman, Mr F. A. Swarbrick, for preliminary discusMr A. McLaren told the board that the syndicate considered Galloway Park would be ideal for its purpose. It was proposed that the board should lay down the track and then lease it to the syndicate. Normally racing would be held at night under floodlight conditions but in view of the present electricity shortage it would be necessary to race in the daytime in the meantime. The centre of the stadium, which would be 440 yards in circumference, could be used for sport in the winter. in a similar manner to the stadiums at Western Springs, Auckland, and Kilbimie. Wellington. It was pointed out as an indication of . the popularity of the sport that speedway racing at Huntly at Easter was attended . by 5000 people. A track was also being laid in Morrinsvillc. Mr Swarbrick commented that there ‘ were a lot of difficulties. The board would ' have to be very wary. Land For Housing As a result of a request from the Hous- i ing Department the board decided to make available a further area in Graham Street, ] Hamilton East, for housing. It was stated : that it would be sufficient for the erection : of five houses. The meeting agreed that ; it should be stressed that the board ex- ' pected reasonably .prompt payment.
